How to Distinguish Between Solenoid Valve and Electric Valve
Electric valves and solenoid valves are common in industrial applications. While solenoid valves are technically a type of electric valve, we typically distinguish between them. Here are their main differences.
Table of contents
What is a Solenoid Valve?
A solenoid valve uses electromagnetic force to control media and is suitable for applications like pneumatic and hydraulic systems, featuring rapid switching capabilities.
Classification of Solenoid Valves by Principle:
- Principle: When energized, the coil generates magnetic force to open the pilot hole, creating a pressure differential that moves the closure element, opening the valve. When de-energized, the spring force closes the valve.
- Features: High fluid pressure range, flexible installation. However, it requires a minimum media pressure.
- Principle: The magnetic force directly opens the valve when energized, and the spring closes it when de-energized.
- Features: No media pressure requirement, suitable for small diameter applications.
3. Direct Pilot Solenoid Valve
- Principle: Combines direct and pilot mechanisms, using pressure differentials and magnetic force to open and close the valve.
- Features: Action is unaffected by media pressure, but it must be installed horizontally.
Solenoid valves have a simple structure, usually with only open and closed states, but they require high media cleanliness; excessive impurities can impair their normal operation.
Common Issues:
- Causes for No Action: Coil damage, lack of power, insufficient media pressure, etc.
- Causes for Improper Opening/Closing: Excessive impurities, worn sealing elements, too much moisture, etc.
What is an Electric Valve?
An electric valve uses an electric actuator to control the valve’s opening and closing, often replacing manual control. The valve body structure is similar to that of a manual valve, but it features an electric actuator.
Electric actuators use motors to drive gear reduction devices, allowing for both linear and rotational motion, applicable to various valve types (e.g., electric gate valves, butterfly valves, etc.). Electric valves operate more slowly than solenoid valves but can adjust the valve opening based on signals.
Our company currently uses electric control valves to maintain water-gas balance in cross-linked sulfurization pipelines, regulating water flow to seal nitrogen within the pipeline. The electric actuator comprises a single-phase servo motor, servo controller, gear reduction device, drive screw, limit switch, and feedback potentiometer, working with pressure transmitters that send signals to the level gauge to control the water-gas balance.
Electric valves have a more complex structure and are better able to withstand voltage spikes due to motor drive, resulting in longer service life and lower failure rates. They are suitable for larger diameter and flow applications, though their switching speed is slower.
Summary
- Solenoid Valves: Suitable for small diameters and low flow, quick switching, but require high media cleanliness and have lower voltage tolerance.
- Electric Valves: Suitable for larger diameters and high flow, slower switching speed, high voltage tolerance, and lower cleanliness requirements.
